BCBS C1 Innovation Lab

Environmental Design & Installation

Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) looked to Corgan designing two renovated floors of a historic downtown Dallas West End building that it could use as a health care innovation lab focused on improving quality and reducing costs. BCBS C1 offers a mix of collaboration space and private areas and environmental graphics can be seen throughout the space, speaking to the BCBS brand.

I had the opportunity to spend six months designing every environmental graphic throughout the space, from tucked away vinyl quotes to 40 foot murals that spread across two floors to full wall photography in defined breakout spaces. I enjoyed working on this product from the ground up, helping at every stage including being a part of the installations during the final stages of construction.

The central presentation stairs provide a front and center stage for team meetings and client presentations. This wall was a beast, 40 feet by 60 feet and it is the first thing you see when you enter the space, not to mention being visible from many difference spaces throughout the office. We did many rounds of studies on colors, typography and patterns. Ultimately it needed to be subtle and monochromatic gave it that dimension without taking away from anything else happening in the space. Scrolling through the below, there are a few of the final options at the end of the slideshow.

The “think space” wall cover is one of my favorite creations, possibly of all time. This was the room, that the second I was told the use, I knew it would be a pattern that was so light it felt like a texture. The lights are turned on all the time and when you walk in this space you turn on that right side of your brain, leave the analytics at the door and turn on the creative. It is a space to let go of outside factors and focus on the task at hand, with all the tools and visuals for collaboration waiting for you.

The break room is not the space to heat up your lunch and leave, but be a part of West End Dallas and to inspire a healthier lifestyle. Originally, the idea was to inspire with healthy habits, but that quickly transformed into the idea of showing just how walkable and greenspace friendly Dallas is. The Trust for Public Land says 71% of Dallas residents live within a 10 minute walk of a park. This inspired a map of different walking distances from 0.5 miles to 2.0 miles, something that could casually be achieved during a lunch hour. Ultimately, the client wanted to inspire, but not feel forceful with their active lifestyle inspiration. This narrowed the design down to a Downtown Dallas map with pops of color representing different part locations within walking distance. In such a white space with full wall windows this such a fun space to play with darkness and the black covering adding a welcome contract to an open and airy office concept.
